Trezor.io/Start: Secure Device Initialization

Welcome to Your Security Journey

This comprehensive guide details the secure, step-by-step process for setting up your new Trezor hardware wallet. You must follow the instructions on your computer screen and the physical Trezor device display to ensure a secure initialization. Always start at the official source: Go to Trezor Suite

CRITICAL SECURITY WARNING: Never enter your Recovery Seed (Wallet Backup) into any website, software, or computer keyboard. The seed is only ever displayed on the Trezor device screen and should only be entered using the device itself (for Model T/Safe 5) or by following the randomized PIN matrix on your computer (for Model One).

Phase 1: Preparation and Connection

01

Inspect the Packaging

Before connecting your device, thoroughly inspect the packaging for any signs of tampering. Check the holographic seal (Model One) or the ultrasonic weld (Model T/Safe 5) on the USB port. If anything looks compromised, do not use the device. Contact Trezor support immediately for a replacement.

  • Check holographic seal integrity.
  • Verify all contents are present.
02

Download Trezor Suite

Navigate directly to trezor.io/suite and download the official Trezor Suite application for your desktop operating system (Windows, macOS, or Linux). While a web version exists, the desktop application provides the most secure and comprehensive experience. Avoid downloading from third-party sites.

Install the software and launch the application.

Download Suite
03

Connect Your Device

Plug your Trezor device into your computer using the supplied USB cable. Trezor Suite will automatically detect the device. The application will guide you through an initial authenticity check to confirm your device is genuine and safe to use. Follow the on-screen prompts and confirmations on your Trezor's display.

  • Use the original USB cable.
  • Confirm connection in Trezor Suite.

Phase 2: Firmware and Wallet Creation

04

Install/Update Firmware

Your Trezor device ships without firmware installed. Trezor Suite will prompt you to install the latest official firmware. Click Install firmware and allow the process to complete. This is mandatory and ensures the core functionality and latest security patches are active.

Verification: The firmware signature will be verified automatically by Trezor Suite.

05

Create New Wallet

Once the firmware is installed, select the option to Create new wallet. This process will generate a new set of private keys and, most importantly, your unique 12, 18, 20, or 24-word Wallet Backup (Recovery Seed). This seed is the ultimate key to your crypto.

The device may offer a choice of backup methods (e.g., Standard or Shamir Backup). Choose Standard for the typical single recovery phrase.

06

Generate Wallet Backup

The Trezor device will display your words one by one. You must meticulously write these words down in the correct numerical order on the provided physical backup card(s). Use a pen and keep the card offline in a secure, fireproof location.

Reminder: This physical card is the ONLY backup for your funds. If the Trezor is lost, damaged, or stolen, this list of words is needed to recover your wallet on a new device. Never photograph it or store it digitally.

Phase 3: Verification and Final Security

07

Verify Your Backup

Immediately after writing down your words, Trezor Suite and your device will guide you through a verification process. You will be asked to confirm specific words from your list (e.g., "What is the 5th word?" or "What is the 10th word?"). Enter the requested words using the method appropriate for your Trezor model (buttons or touchscreen).

DO NOT skip this step. A verified backup is the only way to be sure you can recover your funds.

08

Set Your PIN

You will now be prompted to set a strong PIN for device access. The PIN is used to unlock the Trezor device for transactions or configuration changes. Enter the PIN directly on the Trezor device screen (or via the randomized matrix displayed in Trezor Suite for Model One).

  • Recommended: 4 to 9 digits.
  • Avoid simple patterns or personal dates.
  • The number layout scrambles for security.
09

Name and Complete Setup

As the final steps, Trezor Suite will ask you to: 1) Give your device a unique, memorable name. 2) Select the cryptocurrencies you want to enable and display (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.). These settings can be changed later.

Click Complete Setup. Your Trezor is now initialized, secured, and ready for use. You will be taken to the Trezor Suite Dashboard.

Secure Usage Best Practices

Your Trezor device is now the most secure point for managing your digital assets. Remember these critical safety protocols:
